“I Stories” raise awareness around gender-based violence
Each year, Johannesburg-based GenderLinks asks women and men across the country to submit stories about how gender-based violence has affected them. The stories are published into a book, distributed to media outlets and posted on GenderLinks’ website. Some of the women who shared their experiences for this year’s “I Stories” publication got together to record brief audio versions for radio stations, hoping that this would increase the reach of their important stories.
The recording was done by CMFD (Community Media for Development) Productions, who also produced 3 short radio spots promoting the South African “16 Days of Activism on Gender Violence,” which runs from November 24 – December 10.

Annie Qulee is a Liberian living in Budubum refugee camp. The camp, located just outside of Accra, is home to roughly 3500 refugees. She supports her three boys on the $2/day she earns selling potato greens at the camp’s market. The 43-year-old fled Monrovia in 1996 after loosing most of her family and friends during Liberia’s first civil war and has since been living at Buduburam. Although there was a volunteer repatriation back to Liberia this fall, Annie stayed in Ghana. She says the $5 given to refugees for leaving, would not be enough to support herself and her boys while they try and establish new lives.
